New to Maya

This was my first time working with Maya. I found it a lot easier to work with not really sure why cause its practically the same as 3DsMax. This is my architectural visualization project. A kitchen in which I designed myself.

And this is my Organic Project, an original character. Of which I hope to put into a pose before next quarter!

Then next quarter I am in Materials and Lighting where I will get to give both of these scenes just that.
Also next quarter I'll be taking Acting for Animators, a 2D based class and Traditional Animation Studio which is a two quarter long course of a group project going through all the steps from writing to creating a short of some kind! I'm really looking forward to it! Also! I'll be interning for the Shinebox in Minneapolis! I'm very excited and can't wait to see what experiences come from it!

Thanks for checking me out!

It's Been A While!

Hey guys, here are some of my final composited renders for my first project in my Digital Imaging class. The room itself was Modeled by Dan Wade the 'Haunted Hallway' with objects borrowed from the scene 'Artistry' modeled by Giorigo Luciano. Both offered as resource of 3dRender.com

Here are my shots.

Some shots I had to create for the process of the project where. creating different moods with strictly the lighting and color after everything had textures and materials.

My moods were, cool, warm, and suspenseful.

My other class is working in Maya (for the first time) So my project is looking great but technical difficulties are making it hard to share it with you. So stay tuned hopefully some troubleshooting will do the trick! :)

Here's a doodle I did on my iPad today using the app Paper by FiftyThree. It's really awesome! I need to invest in the other pens and brushes to make some really cool digital sketches but just can't quite do it at the moment lol. But if you've got any apps you use to get your creative juices flowin' let me know!

And if you don't already know you can view my work on all of these sites!

Updated Portfolio Site - And some EXCLUSIVE Insights for my blog followers!

I've just done some updating and organizing on my portfolio site. Now I've got all of my current work all together, so now hopefully with finals fast approaching I can focus and get some nice 3D animations completed to put up on there as well after this quarter is over!

And because my blog is starting to be a little more about the behind the scenes I'll let you in on a little bit of what I've been up to.

In 3D We've created the bouncing ball, added a tail. Then we added feet and legs to that ball with tail. From there we started moving up adding hips, a spine, shoulders, arms, neck and a head, then finally putting a skin over it.

Now we are working on making a character pick up objects, and push or pull them! It's all definitely been a challenge but I'm loving all of the knowledge I'm getting from this class!

But these are exclusives, never before seen other than other students so feel special! Its just a little thanks for checking out my blog!

BUT if you want to...
Go check out my site and see if there's anything you've missed of my work!

Thanks Everybody!

Family Portrait Illustration

I did this illustration as a gift for my mother's 50th birthday! She loved it and the other members of my family loved seeing themselves as characters! And it fits perfectly on the stairway wall with the rest of the family portraits! :)

Commission Work

Christina's

This logo design was my first contracted commissioned work, which was really exciting for me. The design is for a family friends' hair salon, known as "Christina's!" I was very happy to do this for her and was a very exciting experience.

Here is my process:

Here is the poster design:

The optional colors:

3D Organic Model

Eugene Spelling 3D Model

Reference Images:

Process:
I began by mapping out my typology in Photoshop and then used that as a template to map out the typology of the face with splines. Then pulling the individual vertices out to form the shape of the face.

From there I began modeling facial features like the lips, the eyes and eye lids.

I modeled the ears separately which proved to make it almost more difficult in a way. I also modeled the internal pouch for the mouth and began to model gums and teeth but put it on hold in order to finish out the required features of the model.

I attempted to model this character's balloon-like hair in two different ways. The second attempt on the right is the strategy I got from digital tutors which was much more effective, by dividing the different parts of the hair up rather than making it one solid piece.

The modeling of the hair and rigging of the face were both things I wanted to do but like the internal mouth construction I had to hold off in order to complete what was required. I do plan to revisit this project though so eventually this will be completed.

I also attempted to unwrap the UVW map with intentions to give it life like texture and colors in Photoshop but it was a little to complex and wasn't able to get a handle on it before the deadline for this project, but I'm not done fiddling around with it either! I will get this figured out!

This is the final stages that I took this project for the class that is. I posed the character model into a smirk that I have designed to be a recognizable smirk for this character. Then rendered him out in different required ways. Those are displayed below.

Problems/ Solutions:
The only problems I really had was with attempting to give the model a skin like material. Which I knew to be unnecessary for this intro to 3D modeling class but I wanted to give it a shot. It proved to be quite difficult. I tried UVW Unwrap modifier and with several attempts was too complex. Then I tried to paint with Mudbox and again had problems.

I suppose the solution I found was that this is my first organic model and there are probably some structural problems that made it so difficult to do this. My solution to this problem is to attempt at redoing this head or fixing what errors are in its structure.
Or also I could move on and try a different Organic Model and try to keep the typology minimal and try my best to keep it all standard, then I can use that model to attempt UVW Unwrap or Mudbox painting for practice.
